High school football Week 2: Cast your vote for the Independent Mail Athlete of the Week

It's that time again – time to pick the Independent Mail Athlete of the Week! 

Each week during high school football season, we'll highlight one player from Anderson area teams whose game performance was notable the week before. Voting will be open Tuesday mornings through noon on Thursdays, and winners will be announced by 5 p.m. every Thursday.

Here are the nominees for this week – vote below!

JohnBaylor Altman, Palmetto

In the Mustangs' 49-20 win over Pendleton, quarterback JohnBaylor Altman completed 16 of 22 passes for 332 yards with five touchdowns. 

RJ Ellis, Belton-Honea Path

Despite a 31-14 loss to Greenville, BHP running back RJ Ellis was effective on offense with 22 carries for 171 yards and one touchdown. 

Junior Smith, Westside

Despite their 36-28 loss to Greer, wide receiver Junior Smith totaled six catches for 168 yards and one touchdown. 

Dez Frazier, Wren

In the Hurricanes' 75-8 win over Powdersville, Wren's Dez Frazier affected the game in multiple ways. He totaled six tackles, one tackle for loss and one interception on defense along with an 83-yard kickoff return touchdown. 

Landon Owens, Palmetto

In the Mustangs' 49-20 win against Pendleton, senior Landon Owens made an offensive and defensive impact. On offense he totaled  5 receptions for 117 yards and 3 receiving touchdowns and 39 rushing yards. On defense he had 6 solo tackles and 1 tackle for loss.
